Another year, another exciting Pantone Color of the Year announcement. And 2019’s Living Coral promises “an animating and life-affirming hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” It’s a bright and refreshing shade that can liven up any space. We turned to industry expert Wade Allyn Hallock who shares his expertise on adding it to the home.

What draws you into Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year?
I have been gravitating toward all shades of pink over the past few years. In fact, I just finished installing a café where I used coral as the accent color. The color is rich, fresh, fun and vibrant, and reminds me of the tropics. Coral is not flat; it has pinkish orange tones that can be played with depending on the adjacent colors used and lighting. It’s because of these qualities that I enjoy working with this color in fabric, paint and wallcoverings.
How can this color be easily incorporated into indoor and outdoor spaces?
Adding coral to any space will instantly add life. It’s a great versatile color that can be used as an accent on the piping of outdoor cushions, or in a high gloss lacquer finish in a bathroom. Don’t be afraid to charge up your bedroom this summer by placing a coral throw or sheets on your bed.
What other fabrics and colors work well with coral?
I love mixing blues and greens with coral. You can also mix all shades of purple and fuchsia. Coral is that cool kid on the playground that got along with everyone.
What’s the best way to incorporate any new color in a room?
When you are incorporating a new color into your space you must first decide: how much of an impact do you want to make? Do you want to stay within the neutral range or color scheme you already have, or do you want to liven things up and add a contrasting color? Granted a bold color takes guts, but when you get it right it can change the whole dynamics of a space.
Use the internet when you are looking to add color. It has become such a useful tool with all the amazing images of interiors. Look for rooms that have incorporated your color of choice and look at the impact it has on the space.
